Hello from another San Francisco walker! There was a Morris Olson at the Bureau of Street and Sewer repair as recently as 2000 (http://www.sfgov.org/site/sfdpw_page.asp?id=32877), so I'm guessing it was named after him when he retired or something. (Why anyone would want to be commemorated by a *closed* tunnel is another questiom, though.)

Since birds can't learn lessons, once their behavior is antisocial, it's only logical that they must be killed for the greater good. It's totally darwinian; the baby birds that hatch won't live long, if they hatch at all. Bad genes, no cookie.

My apologies, Tom. My intention was to personify the hills. A ridge referring to itself as a hill would be dishonest--not you. I'll select a word that makes this clearer.

Dave Schweisguth argues that Cathedral Hill, Billy Goat Hill and Parnassus Heights are all not hills. In two of three cases, he's actually refuting Herb Caen's original list.

Read your blog about the hills of San Francisco, which I found amusing.

I've been to top of every hill in San Francisco, several times each, on my city street walk -- which is now about 85 percent complete. I've covered almost every street in the city and get a little pissed off when someone describes something that I've written as "dishonest."

You mention in your blog: "Chronicle authors, Herb Caen included, gave San Francisco 42 hills back in 1959. Years later, Hansen’s Almanac added one more. Tom Graham, the Chronicle’s walking man, added ten more. And Dave Schweisguth took away a few dishonest ones, but left us with 74."

The hills I identified in my story for the Chronicle were carefully researched and I've noticed that several of the people who have since written on the subject reference my work. One of the hills in my story was misidentified and the error was corrected in print. There was noting dishonest about the mistake. I noticed that you did not include Grand View Park on your map of the hills of San Francisco -- Christ, what an oversight! It offers one of the best views of the city. But I wouldn't call your mistake dishonest, though. Please afford me the same consideration...

Gah! They had a phone number on their website, but it's currently down. Yelp says it's closed, but provides no explanation, so I'm not sure if it's just conjecture.

Interesting. One wouldn't expect that sort of nastiness in SOMA—especially that area of SOMA, which is now home to multi-million dollar high-rise condos and the like.

Jen & Ange's great-aunt, I think, lived at <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=69+beaver,+94114&sll=37.76777,-122.432182&sspn=0.148725,0.284271&ie=UTF8&z=16&iwloc=addr&om=1" rel="nofollow">69 Beaver</a>. Their mom mentioned that because it's so close to my house, and after she said that address, she said, "It's okay, you can laugh."
